Tillotson Archbishop Canterbury Portrait, Houbraken Engraving 1746 A finely engraved and highly decorative 18th-century portrait of John Tillotson (1630–1694), Archbishop of Canterbury, executed by the renowned Dutch engraver Jacobus Houbraken (1698–1780) after a portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller.
This engraving was published in London circa 1746–1747 by John and Paul Knapton as part of the celebrated series The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, edited by Thomas Birch. This important publication sought to immortalize key figures in British history through a refined combination of portraiture and biography, and Houbraken’s engravings are widely regarded as among the finest portrait prints of the 18th century.
The composition presents Tillotson in a dignified oval medallion, rendered with remarkable precision and tonal depth. Houbraken’s masterful line work captures the softness of facial features and the richness of drapery, demonstrating his exceptional control of light and shadow.
