Condition
The print is in very good condition. The image area is crisp and clean, with delicate tonal contrast. The wide margins show only minimal age-related foxing and a few light handling marks near the lower edge. The paper is untrimmed and well-preserved.
About this sheet
A portrait of the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer, a lithograph by Le Gout-Gérard published by Goupil, Vibert & Cie, Paris, with the name "Giacomo Meyerbeer" printed beneath the image alongside his facsimile signature. It is dated about 1855, and a small number, 56, is printed in the lower center.
Meyerbeer sits in an armchair, one hand raised to his chin and the other arm folded across his waist, in a dark coat with a high collar, looking off to one side with a thoughtful expression. The portrait is drawn in soft gray crayon tones, with the chair and the background fading into a lightly tinted ground, so that the face and hands carry the weight of the picture. The foot of the sheet lists the publishers: Goupil, Vibert & Cie, Paris, with London given as "E. Gambart & Co., 25 Berners Street" and New York as "Goupil, Vibert & Co., Broadway."
Meyerbeer was born in 1791 and died in 1864, and his operas, among them Les Huguenots, Robert le Diable and L'Africaine, dominated the Paris Opera. This portrait belongs to a numbered series of well-known artists and cultural figures issued by the publisher.
