Pair of Tudor Royal Portrait Engravings, Henry V & Henry VI, c.1790
This refined pair of late 18th-century copperplate engravings depicts two significant monarchs of the English medieval period: King Henry V (reigned 1413–1422) and King Henry VI (reigned 1422–1461, 1470–1471). These portraits form part of a cohesive series of royal images engraved for historical publications, most notably editions of Paul de Rapin’s History of England, and were produced in London around 1790.
Each portrait is presented within a classical oval frame set inside a geometric border, creating a clean and balanced composition typical of late Georgian design. The restrained elegance of the layout gives these prints a particularly strong decorative appeal, making them highly suitable for interior design applications.
Henry V is shown in profile, wearing a crown and holding an orb, emphasizing his authority and legacy as one of England’s most celebrated warrior kings, renowned for his victory at the Battle of Agincourt. His counterpart, Henry VI, is depicted facing forward, wearing a cap and richly ornamented robes, with a contemplative expression that reflects his more troubled reign during the Wars of the Roses.
Both engravings are noted as being derived from paintings in the Royal Collection at Kensington Palace, reinforcing their connection to historic royal portraiture. The inscriptions at the top indicate they were engraved for Harrison’s edition of Rapin’s history, while the precise linear engraving and delicate tonal shading reflect the high standards of English printmaking of the period.
