About this sheet

An original Viennese portrait lithograph of Lord Palmerston, drawn on the stone in 1841, when he was British Foreign Secretary. He is shown half length and nearly frontal, head turned slightly to the left, with thick curling hair, long side whiskers and a calm, faintly amused expression. He wears a dark coat with a broad velvet collar over a high black stock and white shirt front, and the figure is vignetted, its edges drawn in loose crayon strokes.

The stone is signed at lower left "Stadler" with the date "841", and the printer's line at lower right reads "Gedr. bei Joh. Höfelich". Below the portrait the name "LORD PALMERSTON." is lettered in shaded capitals, and the publisher's line "Wien, bei L. T. Neumann" is printed beneath it. Ludwig Theodor Neumann was a Vienna print publisher, and Johann Höfelich ran one of the city's lithographic printing shops.

Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784 to 1865), served as Foreign Secretary from 1830 to 1841 with one short break, and again from 1846 to 1851, and was twice Prime Minister. In 1840 and 1841 his handling of the Eastern crisis and the Treaty of London made him one of the best known statesmen in Europe, and Vienna, the center of Metternich's diplomacy, followed his career closely. A portrait issued there that year shows how far his reputation had spread.

Viennese portrait lithography was at its height in the 1830s and 1840s, and this sheet shows the soft, velvety blacks and fine modeling of the face that made the city's lithographers admired across Europe. The large sheet leaves broad margins around the image.

This is a striking portrait for a collection of British political history or of Viennese lithography, and it would look well framed simply in a study or library.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
