This antique lithograph depicts David Friedrich Strauß (1808–1874), one of the most influential and controversial German theologians of the 19th century. Strauß became renowned for his groundbreaking work Das Leben Jesu, kritisch bearbeitet (The Life of Jesus, Critically Examined), published in 1835–36, in which he applied historical-critical methods to the New Testament. His writings shook European theology and established him as a central figure in debates over faith, history, and philosophy.

The portrait shows Strauß in midlife, dressed in formal attire with a dark coat and high-collared shirt. His serious expression and direct gaze reflect both his intellectual determination and the weight of his reputation as a controversial thinker. At the lower right, the lithograph is signed in the stone: “Steend. van J. D. Steuerwaldt”, indicating the Hamburg lithographer Johann Daniel Steuerwaldt (1808–1865).
