About this sheet

An original lithographed portrait of Heinrich Graf von Einsiedel, drawn from life by the Dresden lithographer Carl Lutherer and published in Dresden. Below the image the sitter's facsimile signature reads "Heinrich Graf von Einsiedel", and the caption beneath it describes him as "Mitglied der I. Kammer sächs. Ständeversammlung", a member of the First Chamber of the Saxon Diet.

He is shown at bust length, turned slightly to the right, a man of middle years with short brushed hair, long side whiskers and a calm, direct gaze. He wears a dark coat with broad lapels, a high black stock tied in a bow and a pleated white shirt front, and the figure fades softly into the paper below. The modeling of the face is delicate and precise, the coat drawn in broad strokes of the crayon.

The credits are lettered beneath the image: at left "N. d. Nat. gez. u. lith. v. C. Lutherer", drawn from life and lithographed by C. Lutherer, and at right "gedr. v. C. Herzberg", printed by Herzberg. At the foot of the sheet is the publisher's line "Druck und Verlag der Kleinischen Kunsthandlung in Dresden". Carl Lutherer (1807 to 1850) made many portraits of Saxon public figures for this Dresden print dealer.

Saxony received a constitution in 1831, and from 1833 its Diet met in two chambers, the first made up largely of the nobility and great landowners. Portraits of members of the new assembly were published for an interested public, and they form a valuable record of the men who sat in it.

The sheet is large, with generous margins, and an embossed blank panel below the name. Framed with a wide mat it makes a dignified portrait for a study, a library or a collection devoted to German history.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
