Grand Khan of Tartary Portrait Engraving, Nicolas de Larmessin, Paris, c.1660
A striking and highly decorative mid-17th-century copperplate engraving depicting the “Grand Cam” or Great Khan, identified in the title as the Emperor of Tartary. This evocative portrait was engraved by the renowned French printmaker Nicolas de Larmessin I (c.1632–1694) and published in Paris by Pierre Bertrand around 1660, forming part of a celebrated series of portraits of rulers from across the known world.
The composition presents the figure in a richly detailed oval frame, adorned with ribbon ornament above and a decorative cartouche below. The sitter is shown in elaborate, Europeanized court attire, including a fur-trimmed headdress decorated with pearls and a feather, a jeweled clasp, and a ceremonial scepter. While intended to represent the Great Khan—often associated in European imagination with rulers such as Kublai Khan—the portrait reflects a stylized and interpretive vision rather than a historically accurate likeness.
The engraved text below describes the immense wealth and power attributed to the Emperor of Tartary, referencing his vast dominions and residence in Cambalu (Beijing). Such descriptions reveal the fascination and mystique surrounding Asia in 17th-century Europe, where distant rulers were often depicted through a blend of second-hand reports and artistic imagination.
Larmessin’s work is highly regarded for its clarity, balance, and refined engraving technique. The fine linework, combined with the harmonious composition and strong decorative elements, makes this print both historically significant and visually compelling. It is an excellent example of early European representations of global rulers and the broader cultural exchange of the period.
