About this sheet
An original steel engraving of a bearded old man, lettered "A PORTRAIT" at the head of an ornamental border, engraved by Appold after a painting by the Dutch artist Govert Flinck. The lower corners are lettered "Goevard Flink." at left and "Appold." at right.
The old man is shown half length, turned to the right with his eyes raised, wearing a soft black beret pulled low over long gray hair, a full white beard, a heavy fur trimmed cloak with an embroidered collar and a gold chain with a pendant across his chest. Light falls from the left on the deeply lined face and the curls of the beard, while the background is laid in fine even lines. The image is set within an engraved frame of interlaced strapwork and climbing vine tendrils, with knotwork ornaments at the corners and the title at the top.
Govert Flinck (1615 to 1660) trained in Rembrandt's studio in Amsterdam in the 1630s and became one of the most successful portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Studies of elderly men in fanciful costume, rich in fur, velvet and gold chains, were a specialty of Rembrandt and his pupils, and they were much admired and reproduced by engravers in the nineteenth century, when the great picture galleries of Europe were published plate by plate for a wide public.
Steel engraving allowed the very fine and closely spaced lines seen here, which render the texture of the fur and the softness of the beard with remarkable subtlety. The decorative border and the generous margins make this an attractive sheet to frame, and it would sit well in a study or library, or among other prints after the Dutch masters.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
