.. R.Petrus Canisius (..) - Aubry (c.1650)

Description: Antique portrait titled 'R.Petrus Canisius Societatis Iesv'. Old portrait of Peter Canisius, a renowned Dutch Jesuit Catholic priest. He became known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Part of an unidentified series of German, Dutch and French portraits in ovals, published by Peter Aubry in Strasbourg.

Artists and Engravers: Peter Aubry II (1596-1668), engraver. Some of the prints attributed to him may be the work of his father Peter Aubry I (active 1609, d.1628).
