About this sheet
This is an original antique copper engraving, uncolored, lettered "Westminster from Lambeth." The view looks across the Thames from a railed riverside walk on the Lambeth bank. The Gothic towers of Westminster Abbey rise at the left above a cluster of buildings, a flag flies over the waterfront, and the many arches of Westminster Bridge span the river at the right. Rowing boats, barges and a small sailing craft move on the water, the spires of the city show on the horizon, and in the foreground men lean on the rail, a family walks along the path and boats lie drawn up below.
The title is engraved in script below the image. The artist's credit "Pugh del." is at lower left and the engraver's credit "Rawle sc." at lower right. The imprint above the image reads "Published Augt 11-1804. by Richard Phillips. No 71, St Pauls Church Yard."
The plate comes from Modern London; Being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis, printed for Richard Phillips, No. 71, St. Paul's Church-Yard, by C. Mercier and Co., Northumberland-court, Strand, in 1804, and "illustrated with numerous copper plates." Many of its topographical views were drawn by Edward Pugh, a Welsh painter working in London, and engraved on copper by several London engravers, each of whom signed his own plate. The Lambeth bank opposite Westminster was a favorite viewpoint for artists, giving the Abbey, the old Palace and the bridge in one prospect.
A calm river view that sits well beside other Thames prints.
Condition: Light wear to the top left corner. Age toning; handling soiling along the edges and foxing with some brown staining in the margins. Printed image clean.
