About this sheet

A view down a cobbled street in Trento toward a cluster of medieval towers. At the end of the street rises a slender Romanesque bell tower with paired arched windows, beside it a tall crenellated tower and the curved, arcaded apse of a church. A long awning of hanging cloth is stretched across the street, and beneath it a crowd of townspeople, market women and a laden pack animal gather. Overhanging eaves and tall shuttered houses close in the scene on both sides, and a man in a wide hat leans against a doorway at right.

The plate is lettered "Trent, Tyrol." Trento, the Trent of English travelers, was then part of the Austrian Tyrol. The drawing is by James Duffield Harding (1798 to 1863), a leading English landscape draftsman and teacher, and a master of drawing on stone, credited as "J.D. Harding del." The plate was printed by Charles Hullmandel, the leading London lithographic printer of the period, and published by Charles Tilt of Fleet Street, the publisher of Harding's Sketches at Home and Abroad in 1836.

This is a tinted lithograph: Harding's crayon drawing is printed in black over a buff tint stone, with the highlights left in the white of the paper, so the towers and the hanging cloths seem to catch the sun. The drawing is free and atmospheric, with crisp detail in the architecture.

An upright format that fits well beside a doorway or in a stairwell, and the warm buff tint looks handsome against a cream mat and a narrow gilt frame.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
