About this sheet

A busy waterfront at St. Goar on the Rhine, colored by hand in soft greens, blues and warm earth tones. At the center a square tower and a domed pavilion with a crane stand at the edge of the river, and half-timbered houses crowd the right of the picture beneath a church spire and steep, green hills.

The quay is full of activity: a cart laden with goods and drawn by horses stands among barrels, crates and bundles, travelers and townspeople stand talking, and at left a moored sailing barge and small boats lie at the water's edge. Across the river a castle ruin crowns the far hillside above a small town on the opposite bank.

St. Goar lies in the gorge of the Middle Rhine, facing St. Goarshausen across the river, and was a regular halt for river traffic and travelers. The plate is lettered "St. Goar, - Rhine." and credits the drawing to W.L. Leitch (William Leighton Leitch, the Scottish landscape painter and drawing master) and the engraving to J.W. Archer (John Wykeham Archer).

This is a steel engraving with hand coloring. The color is applied in light washes that leave the fine engraved line visible beneath, giving the scene a fresh, watercolor look.

The color makes this a cheerful piece for a kitchen, a breakfast room or a travel-themed wall, and it looks best in a light wood or cream frame with a soft white mat.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
