About this sheet
A street view in Seville with a religious procession, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption beneath the image reads SEVILLA, the Spanish name of Seville.
The Giralda tower rises at the left of center above a street lined with tall balconied houses, and the Gothic bulk of the cathedral with its pinnacles closes the view at the center. A long religious procession with banners, crosses, candles and carried images moves along the street, led by men in cloaks and robed clergy. At the right some onlookers kneel and one lies prostrate on the paving, spectators crowd the balconies above, and a stall with an awning and goods on display stands at the far right.
No artist or engraver is named on the sheet. Below the caption, the imprint at the left reads Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Inst. in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at the right Eigenthum d. Verleger (property of the publishers). The plate number CCXXIX is engraved at the top right, above the image.
The imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text, published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. The Giralda was built as the minaret of the Almohad mosque and became the bell tower of Seville cathedral.
Even age toning. Handling soiling along the bottom, right and top edges. Slight wear at the bottom right and top right corners.
