About this sheet

An original wood engraving of Saint Thomas' Hospital on the Albert Embankment in Lambeth, with the Houses of Parliament across the Thames, issued as a plate in Cassell's Old and New London. The plate is lettered "St. Thomas' Hospital." beneath the image, with "Cassell's Old & New London. Plate 28." at lower left. It is printed on warm toned paper.

The view looks north along the embankment from a raised point among trees. The long ranges of the hospital, with their arcaded ground floors, mansard roofs and corner turrets, stand in a line of separate blocks behind iron railings, with carriages, riders and strollers on the broad road in front. Across the river rise the Victoria Tower, the central spire and the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster, with Westminster Bridge and the north bank beyond, and steamers, sailing barges and a rowing eight move on the water.

Saint Thomas' Hospital dates back to the twelfth century in Southwark. When its old site was taken for the railway approach to Charing Cross, it moved to this riverside site opposite Parliament, and the new buildings, designed by Henry Currey, were opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. The separate pavilions linked by corridors, clearly shown here, followed the principles of light and ventilation championed by Florence Nightingale, whose training school for nurses was attached to the hospital.

Old and New London, begun by Walter Thornbury and completed by Edward Walford, was published by Cassell in the 1870s and reissued with numbered plates such as this one. The print is uncolored and crisply cut, a fine subject for a doctor's or nurse's study, a consulting room or a collection of Victorian London views.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
