About this sheet
Rovereto in the Trentino, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption reads ROVEREDO, the older spelling of Rovereto.
The castle with its great round tower stands on the rocky spur at the center of the plate, with a long row of buildings along the ridge to the right. Snow peaks rise behind at the left above the lower town, where houses and an arched bridge stand by the river. A road walled on the left side climbs from the foreground toward the castle, and on it a file of soldiers with muskets marches away, followed by a few people and a man carrying a barrel on his back. A small roofed shrine stands on the wall at the lower left.
The engraver's credit at lower right reads L. Daut sc. Nbg (L. Daut engraved it, Nuremberg). The imprint at lower left reads Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Instit. in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at lower right Eigenthum d. Verleger (property of the publishers).
The Hildburghausen imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Rovereto lies in the valley of the Adige in the Trentino and was under Austrian rule at the date of this plate.
Handling soiling along the right edge. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Corners and edges are not shown by this scan. Clean, even paper tone in the margin. Several larger brown marks.
