About this sheet
A finely worked steel engraving of Plauen, seen from a grassy hillside above the town. The view is dominated by a church with two slender towers capped with onion domes and lanterns, rising over a crowd of steep roofs, gables and chimneys. To the right, a long row of buildings lines the valley floor, and wooded slopes climb toward a large house set among trees on the far ridge. A low line of hills closes the horizon under a soft, lightly clouded sky.
The foreground is given over to country life. A woman in a headscarf drives two cows across the meadow, a horse and cart climbs the road into town, and full, rounded trees frame the scene on both sides. The engraver has set the dark, densely cut foliage of the foreground against the paler town and hills, which gives the view a strong sense of depth.
Plauen is the principal town of the Vogtland in the southwest of Saxony, a region known in the nineteenth century for its textile trade. Views like this one were made for the illustrated travel and topographical works that brought the towns of Germany into middle class homes across Europe. The sheet is lettered simply "PLAUEN" beneath the image; no artist, engraver or publisher is named on the plate, so none is claimed here.
The technique is steel engraving, with fine parallel lines for the sky, tight cross hatching in the shadows and a crisp, close texture in the meadow grass. The platemark is clearly visible as an embossed rectangle around the image and title, and the printed image itself is clean.
A compact, detailed townscape that rewards close viewing, it would sit well in a slim wooden frame with a generous mat, hung where it can be seen at arm's length, in a hallway, a study or beside a bookcase.
