About this sheet

A steel engraving of the Palace of the Tuileries in Paris after Thomas Allom, a royal palace that no longer exists.

The long garden front of the palace stretches across the right of the sheet to its great central dome, with a tricolor flying above. Marble statues and a lion sculpture stand along the terrace, couples promenade, and two children chase a hoop in the foreground. On the left the view opens toward the tall houses of the rue de Rivoli.

The plate is lettered "Drawn by T. Allom" and "Engraved by W. Floyd", with the title "Palace of the Tuileries", captions in French and German, "Palais des Tuileries" and "Palast der Tuilerien", and the imprint "Fisher, Son and Co. London and Paris". It belongs to Fisher's series of views of France of the mid 1840s and is dated circa 1845.

The Tuileries was the main royal and imperial residence in Paris until it was burned during the Commune in 1871. Its ruins were cleared in 1883, so views like this one record a vanished palace.

A fine piece of Paris history for a study or living room, and a good companion to views of the Louvre or the Luxembourg. The engraved image measures about 12.4 by 19.1 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
