About this sheet
A richly colored print of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, seen from the south side across a broad open square. The two great west towers stand at left, the south transept with its rose window rises at the center, and the slender central spire soars above the crossing. To the right the nave and apse are wrapped in flying buttresses and pinnacles, all rendered in warm stone browns and ochres beneath a soft blue and cream sky of drifting clouds.
A row of green trees lines a railing at the foot of the cathedral, and the square in front is enlivened by small figures in the dress of the 1860s: ladies in wide crinolines and shawls, gentlemen with canes, a priest in a broad hat and children walking with their parents. Tall Parisian houses frame the view at either side.
The spire shown is the one designed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc and completed in 1859, which places the view after that date; it remained a landmark of the Paris skyline until it was lost in the fire of 2019. The print is lettered "NOTRE DAME" and carries the name of Kronheim and Co., London, the color printers known for their decorative color prints for books in the Victorian period.
The print is printed in colors, with the stone surfaces built up from layered warm tones and the foliage and sky in softer greens and blues. The color is printed, not applied by hand.
The warm palette makes this a lovely companion piece for a reading nook or a guest room, where a mellow gold or oak frame would bring out its color.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
