About this sheet
A steel engraving of Leipzig seen across the meadows, signed and dated in the plate by J.G. Martini, 1836.
The skyline of the city runs along the horizon, with what appears to be the steep roof of St. Thomas's among the church towers rising above the houses. In front, broad meadows and a winding river lead the eye back, crossed by a small footbridge at left and a weir at right. Two tall trees stand in the foreground, where a group of country people rests beside a wheelbarrow.
The plate is lettered "Leipzig", "Stahlstich v. I.G. Martini 1836" at lower right, and the plate number CXXXXVIII at the upper right. A dealer's record identifies the plate as from Meyer's Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut, and the date is engraved in the plate.
Leipzig was one of the great trading and publishing cities of Germany, and this pastoral view shows it before the railways and industry of the following decades changed its edges.
The sheet is laid in an old card window mount, which suits a simple frame. A good piece for anyone with a link to Leipzig or Saxony. The engraved image measures about 11 by 16 cm (height by width).
Condition: Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. The sheet is laid in an old card window mount. Printed image clean.
