About this sheet

A view of Ljubljana, lettered "Laybach", from Abel Hugo's France Militaire, the illustrated history of the French armies published in Paris in the 1830s.

The castle sits on its hill above the town, with the roofs of the old center and church towers spread below it. In the foreground a road leads past a church with an onion domed tower, horsemen and a cart move along the track, and a small wooden roadside shrine stands by the river bank. The style is light and open, with the sky left almost blank above a few outlined clouds.

The plate is headed "France Militaire." and titled "Laybach". The names of the draughtsman and engraver are lettered in small script below the image and read as Darvin, del., and Boullemier, sculp. Abel Hugo's France Militaire, Histoire des armées françaises de terre et de mer, de 1792 à 1837 was published in Paris by Delloye in 1838.

Ljubljana appears in a French military history because it was the capital of Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces from 1809 to 1813, when French troops held the city. Abel Hugo was the elder brother of Victor Hugo.

A good piece for anyone with ties to Slovenia, or for a collector of Napoleonic history, it frames well in a narrow dark moulding. The engraved image measures about 10.7 by 15.8 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat.

Condition: Small loss or rounding to the top left corner. Clean, straight edges. Light, uneven toning, slightly darker towards the edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
