About this sheet

A panoramic steel engraving of Istanbul across the Golden Horn, seen from the Okmeydanı, after W.H. Bartlett, from The Beauties of the Bosphorus.

The old city spreads along the far shore, its skyline crowned by the domes and minarets of the great imperial mosques. A ship under sail and small boats cross the Golden Horn below, and on the near side cypresses and plane trees fill a green valley. In the foreground a party of horsemen and men in Ottoman dress gathers on the hillside.

The plate is lettered "W.H. Bartlett" and "H. Adlard", with the title "View from the Ocmeidan", captions in French and German, "Vue de l'Ocméidan" and "Prospect vom Okmeidan", the plate number 24, and the imprint "London, Published for the Proprietors, by Geo. Virtue, 26, Ivy Lane". It comes from The Beauties of the Bosphorus, with text by Julia Pardoe and plates after William Henry Bartlett, published in London by George Virtue in 1838 and 1839.

The Okmeydanı, the archery ground above the Golden Horn, was one of the best known viewpoints over the city. Bartlett's panorama gives the whole sweep of the historic peninsula.

A superb view for a living room or study, and the natural centerpiece of a group of Istanbul prints. The engraved image measures about 12.4 by 18.7 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat.

Condition: Light wear to the bottom right corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
