About this sheet
A genre scene on a terrace in the Borghese Gardens. A man in a feathered hat and rustic jacket sits on a carved stone bench, guiding a small boy who blows a set of bagpipes held under his arm. Beside them a young woman in Italian country dress, with a white headcloth, embroidered apron and long braids, stands spinning thread with a drop spindle and distaff and watches the lesson. Behind them rises a pedestal carved with an eagle, carrying a statue, and a balustrade with stone benches looks out over umbrella pines toward distant hills. The light falls from the left, catching the woman's white sleeves and apron and the worn surfaces of the old stone, while the dark trees behind give depth to the scene.
The plate is lettered "In the Borghese Gardens." The gardens of the Villa Borghese in Rome were a favorite subject for painters of Italian life. The picture is after G.G. Kilburne (George Goodwin Kilburne, 1839 to 1924), an English painter of genre scenes, and was engraved by F. Joubert. The plate carries the imprint of Cassell, Petter and Galpin of London and was issued in their Picturesque Europe.
A steel engraving, finely and evenly cut, with crisp detail in the embroidery of the costume, the carved stone and the foliage, and soft graded tones in the sky.
A lively scene for a music room, a dining room or a hallway, framed in black or dark gold to bring out the silvery tones of the engraving.
