About this sheet
This is a view of Castel Sant'Angelo and the Tiber in Rome, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The French caption at the center reads ROME. PONT ET CHÂTEAU St ANGE., Rome, bridge and castle of Sant'Angelo. At the left the Hungarian reads RÓMA. SZ. ANGYALVÁR ÉS HID, VATICANUM, Sz. Péter' temploma. and at the right the German ENGELSBURG, PETERSKIRCHE UND VATICAN in Rom., naming the castle, the bridge or Saint Peter's, and the Vatican.
The round drum of the castle rises at the right with the statue on its summit and the bastion walls below. The arched bridge of Sant'Angelo crosses the river at the center, with the dome of Saint Peter's and the Vatican buildings beyond. Tall old houses with balconies line the bank at the left, where porters load baskets. A large boat under a canvas cover lies moored in the foreground, a boat with a striped awning passes at the right and a barrel floats in the water.
The engraver's credit Stahlstich v Bernhard Metzeroth is engraved at the lower right just below the image, German for steel engraving by Bernhard Metzeroth. The roman numeral V. is engraved at the top right. No publisher's imprint appears on the sheet.
The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Castel Sant'Angelo was built as the mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian and later served the popes as a fortress.
Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin. Corners and edges are not shown by this scan. Several larger brown marks.
