About this sheet

An engraving of Bedford on the Great Ouse after J.M.W. Turner, published in 1831 for his Picturesque Views in England and Wales.

The river runs toward the old bridge of Bedford beneath a low, hazy sun, with the spire of St. Paul's Church rising above the town. In the foreground a gentleman in a top hat fishes from the bank, a punt carries a party of ladies and a boatman, and a heavy barge is moored at right. Trees and riverside buildings frame both banks.

The plate is lettered "Drawn by J.M.W. Turner, R.A." and "Engraved by J.T. Willmore", with the title "Bedford" in script and "Bedfordshire" below, and the imprint "London, Published 1831, for the Proprietor, by Moon, Boys and Graves, Pall Mall", with "Printed by McQueen" at right.

Turner's Picturesque Views in England and Wales, issued in parts from 1827 to 1838, is regarded as the summit of his work for engravers, and the plates were made under his close supervision. James Tibbitts Willmore was one of his favorite engravers.

A fine piece for anyone from Bedford or any collector of Turner, it suits a study or library. The engraved image measures about 16.3 by 23.1 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat.

Condition: Light wear to the top left corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Small light flecks in the image, otherwise clean.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
