About this sheet

A rocky stream running through a wooded glen, an original steel engraving titled "On the Lyne", published in the 1870s by D. Appleton and Company of New York. The title is engraved in script beneath the image, with the publisher's name below it.

The view shows the river Lyne, in Cumbria, England, tumbling over boulders in the left foreground beneath leaning birches and thick brush. A figure rests on the stones at the center, and a crag with a track along its flank rises at the upper right against a sky of broken cloud. The engraver has used fine cross-hatching in the shadows of the trees and a lighter stipple in the sky to give the picture a gentle, painterly depth.

Appleton was a New York publisher of illustrated books, and landscape engravings of this kind were produced for its gift and subscription volumes. The subject here is an English river, not an American scene.
