Mr Musters, French Belle Époque Horse Racing Satirical Chromolithograph, 1885
This lively French chromolithograph caricature titled “Mr Musters” forms part of the humorous illustrated series Album Comique, produced in Paris during the late nineteenth century and attributed to the caricaturist Antoine Bisetsky (1817–1892). Executed as a facsimile after an original watercolor, the print combines refined chromolithographic color printing with the playful exaggeration characteristic of Belle Époque satire, presenting a humorous portrait drawn from aristocratic and sporting culture.
The composition depicts a stout gentleman rider mounted on a dynamically leaping black horse, raising his top hat in greeting while clearing a rustic obstacle in the countryside. The exaggerated proportions, theatrical gesture, and stylized landscape convey the lighthearted visual language of contemporary French caricature, where recognizable personalities from elite society were transformed into symbolic figures embodying social habits, leisure pursuits, and personality traits. The equestrian theme places the subject within the fashionable world of horse racing and sporting aristocracy, a popular source of satire and fascination in late nineteenth-century Paris.
The chromolithographic technique demonstrates subtle tonal transitions and rich color layering designed to imitate watercolor painting, emphasized by the inscription “Fac-similé d’Aquarelle.” The sheet bears the printed date “10 Novembre 1885” and belongs to the second year (“2ème Année”) of the Album Comique series, which included portraits of figures connected with racing, military life, and high society. These prints were issued individually and sometimes housed in publisher’s tubes, making surviving examples appealing to collectors of Belle Époque caricature as well as decorative art buyers.
From a decorative perspective, the strong diagonal movement of the horse and rider creates visual energy that translates well into interior design contexts. Condition report: Age-related foxing and light spotting visible primarily in margins, with overall toning consistent with nineteenth-century paper. Colors remain bright and attractive. Minor handling wear commensurate with age.
