Chacun Son Tour – Humorous Hand-Colored Etching by Boris O’Klein, ca. 1930s
This delightful hand-colored etching and aquatint titled “Chacun Son Tour!” (translated as “Everyone Has His Turn!”) is by Boris O’Klein, from his popular Dirty Dogs of Paris series. Measuring approximately 16 x 43.5 cm (image 13 x 43 cm), the print is signed and titled in pencil by the artist and inscribed in the plate “Copyright by O’Klein, Chamarande (S.&O.)” and “Eau forte originale.”
The composition humorously depicts a procession of dogs walking along a Parisian street, each reacting in turn to the flirtatious glance of a stylish dog at the front. O’Klein captures human-like behavior in these canine figures, full of animation, expression, and mischief. The carefully applied colors—reds, greens, and oranges—add charm and individuality to each character, bringing the humorous parade to life.
Boris O’Klein (1893–1985), born in Moscow and raised in France, was celebrated for his witty and slightly risqué depictions of dogs in human situations. His Dirty Dogs of Paris series from the 1930s–1950s remains his most beloved work, combining technical mastery in etching and aquatint with sharp social observation and humor. Each scene reflects Parisian life through the antics of dogs with distinct personalities and human habits.
