Antique View of Siam — Royal Barges, Elephants & Customs Engraving, Chatelain c.1720
This detailed early 18th-century copperplate engraving titled “Vue & description de la ville de Siam” was published around 1720 by Henri Abraham Chatelain in Amsterdam as part of his renowned Atlas Historique, one of the most ambitious encyclopedic publications of the Enlightenment period. The engraving offers a fascinating European visual account of the Kingdom of Siam (modern-day Thailand), presenting architecture, religious life, royal ceremony, and social customs through a richly structured composition of illustrated panels accompanied by explanatory French text.
The layout is divided into multiple narrative scenes, combining panoramic views with ethnographic studies. The central upper panel presents a broad view of the city of Siam, depicting temple complexes, urban structures, and surrounding landscapes as understood by European observers. Flanking and accompanying panels illustrate royal barges with elaborate ornamentation — including the impressive “Ballon du Roy à 120 rameurs” — reflecting the ceremonial importance of waterways in Siamese court culture.
Several panels focus on elephants, emphasizing their political and cultural significance. Scenes include the king mounting an elephant, methods used to train and control these animals, and depictions of elephants used in ceremonial or hunting contexts. Additional vignettes portray talapoins (Buddhist monks), pagodas, mandarins, and members of the general population, providing insight into clothing, religious practice, and social hierarchy as interpreted by European publishers.
Produced during a period of intense European curiosity about Asia, Chatelain’s Atlas Historique aimed to synthesize travel accounts, missionary reports, and geographic knowledge into visually engaging plates. This engraving reflects Enlightenment-era attempts to understand and categorize foreign cultures, blending documentary ambition with decorative engraving craftsmanship. Today, such prints are valued both for their historical content and for their strong decorative presence, combining narrative richness with balanced composition.
