Velázquez Prince on Horseback – Antique Chromolithograph, c.1880
This richly colored antique chromolithograph titled A Pupil of La Haute Ecole reproduces one of the most celebrated equestrian portraits by the Spanish master Diego Velázquez, depicting Don Balthazar Carlos, Prince of Asturias and heir to the Spanish throne. Published in Cassell’s Book of the Horse around 1878–1881, the print combines fine Victorian chromolithographic craftsmanship with the grandeur of Spanish court portraiture from the Golden Age.
The young prince is shown mounted on a spirited black horse in an elegant display of classical horsemanship, reflecting the ideals of aristocratic riding culture and royal education. Velázquez originally painted the portrait during the 17th century for the Spanish royal court, capturing both the dignity and youthful confidence of the Infante. The composition became widely admired for its dramatic balance, restrained palette, and noble equestrian pose, later entering the renowned collection of Sir Richard Wallace.
Cassell’s Book of the Horse was among the great illustrated sporting publications of Victorian England, celebrated for combining equestrian knowledge with fine art reproductions. Plates such as this one were produced using chromolithography, a sophisticated color printing technique that allowed publishers to imitate the richness of oil paintings with remarkable depth and tonal subtlety. The warm earth tones, dramatic black horse, and delicate costume details demonstrate the high quality typical of these late 19th-century editions.
The print appeals to collectors of equestrian art, Spanish history, Velázquez reproductions, and decorative sporting imagery. Framing tips: This print displays particularly well in dark walnut, black lacquer, or ebonized frames with a wide ivory or cream mat. A thin gilt fillet complements the warm chromolithographic tones and enhances the regal Spanish character of the composition. Ideal for classic libraries, equestrian interiors, or traditional European-style rooms.
