Description
This elegant engraving depicts Pompey’s Column in Alexandria, one of the most celebrated classical monuments of Roman Egypt. Rising dramatically from the surrounding ruins, the column dominates the composition and serves as a focal point within a carefully balanced architectural landscape.
The view comes from Voyage d’Egypte et de Nubie (1755) by Frederik Ludvig Norden, whose meticulous drawings set a new standard for accuracy in the documentation of ancient sites. The engraving was executed by Marcus Tuscher, translating Norden’s field observations into refined copperplate form.
Pompey’s Column held particular fascination for European scholars and travelers as one of the few standing monumental remnants of ancient Alexandria. Norden’s view captures the site before later modern development, preserving a historically important moment in the monument’s visual history.
