King Edward V Portrait Engraving, Princes in the Tower, Vertue, c.1732
This evocative 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a rare and historically charged portrait of King Edward V of England (reigned briefly in 1483), one of the most tragic and enigmatic figures in British royal history. Executed by the distinguished English engraver George Vertue around 1732, the print was created for Paul de Rapin’s influential History of England, a major source of historical imagery in the Georgian period.
The composition is rich in symbolism and carefully constructed to reflect the youth and fate of the young king. Edward V is shown in half-length within a deep-set architectural frame, dressed in royal robes and wearing a delicate crown. His youthful features and composed expression convey both innocence and quiet dignity.
Above the portrait, a striking allegorical element appears: a winged creature—often interpreted as a harpy—reaching toward or holding a crown. This unusual motif introduces a layer of dramatic symbolism, suggesting the fragility of power and the uncertain fate that would soon overtake the young monarch. Below the portrait, two lambs are depicted, reinforcing themes of innocence, vulnerability, and sacrifice—imagery closely associated with Edward V’s historical narrative.
The inscription identifies him as “Edward V, King of England & France,” reflecting the traditional royal title of English monarchs of the period. At the bottom, the engraving notes that the image is derived “From a Limning in a Manuscript-book now in the Library at Lambeth,” linking the composition to an earlier historical source and enhancing its scholarly significance.
Edward V is famously remembered as one of the “Princes in the Tower,” whose mysterious disappearance remains one of the great unresolved episodes of English history. This engraving captures both his royal status and the poignant legacy that surrounds his brief reign.
