Antique Lithograph of Italian Faience Vasque, Stockholm Museum, Delange, 1869
Large-format antique lithograph depicting a monumental Italian faience vasque in the grotesque style, preserved in the collection of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The vessel is richly ornamented with sculptural lion heads and paws forming the handles and supports, while its body is decorated with playful cherubs, fantastical animals, and festoons of flowers. The balance of painted grotesque decoration with bold sculptural relief reflects the inventive artistry of Renaissance maiolica masters.
This lithograph originates from Henri Delange’s *Recueil de Faïences Italiennes des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe Siècles* (Paris, 1869), a lavish folio documenting the finest examples of Italian tin-glazed pottery. The grotesque style, inspired by ancient Roman decorations unearthed in the Domus Aurea, was a hallmark of Renaissance ceramics from Urbino and other Italian centers, where fantastical motifs transformed functional vessels into works of display art admired throughout Europe.
