Interior of St Agnes Outside the Walls, Rome – Classical Basilica View, 1868
This atmospheric lithograph depicts the interior of the Basilica of Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, one of Rome’s earliest Christian churches. Tall columns, richly decorated arches, and a coffered ceiling lead the eye toward the distant altar, while visitors move quietly through the sacred space. Philippe Benoist conveys both architectural grandeur and devotional calm with remarkable sensitivity.
Produced in Paris between 1867 and 1869 for the series “Rome dans sa Grandeur,” this plate documents a site of profound historical and spiritual importance. Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura stands on the burial place of Saint Agnes and preserves layers of Roman, early Christian, and medieval architecture. Benoist’s rendering emphasizes the basilica’s spatial harmony and decorative detail.
