Gold – Renaissance Alchemy Interior Engraving after Tourrier
This atmospheric 19th-century steel engraving titled Gold presents an evocative Renaissance-inspired interior scene centered around themes of alchemy, wealth, and scientific experimentation. The composition was painted by A.H. Tourrier and engraved by G. Greatbach, later published by D. Appleton & Co. of New York, one of the leading American illustrated book publishers of the Victorian period.
The scene unfolds within a dimly lit chamber filled with scholarly and alchemical instruments. At the left foreground stands a distillation apparatus and furnace equipment associated with early chemistry and the medieval pursuit of transforming base metals into gold. The richly dressed figures gathered around the central alchemist suggest a moment of revelation or negotiation, while the seated nobleman to the right observes the proceedings with cautious fascination.
