This engraved plate originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s influential Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721. The sheet presents a carefully arranged group of celebrated classical statues, combining full-length figures with smaller oval medallion studies. At the center and upper register are idealized nude figures after ancient marble sculptures, including Apollo-type representations, shown in contrapposto poses that emphasize anatomical balance, movement, and classical proportion.
Montfaucon’s project aimed to catalog and interpret the surviving sculptural heritage of antiquity for scholars, artists, and collectors. Rather than presenting isolated decorative images, these engravings functioned as visual reference plates, recording canonical forms of ancient sculpture as they were known in early 18th-century Rome and major European collections such as the Raccolta Maffei. The plate reflects this scholarly intent, with each figure clearly isolated, labeled, and engraved to communicate form and volume.
From a decorative perspective, this sheet has strong vertical presence. The dominant standing figures command attention and read almost like architectural sculptures when framed, while the surrounding oval vignettes create rhythm and visual balance. An off-white, stone, or pale gray mat paired with a dark walnut, blackened wood, or muted gilt frame complements the classical subject beautifully.
