This striking antique natural history engraving depicts Dipteres—two-winged insects including robber flies and large predatory fly species—rendered with remarkable clarity and visual presence. Issued circa 1800 for the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, this plate is Diptères, Plate 1, engraved after drawings by Jean Baptiste Blanchard, one of the most accomplished French scientific illustrators of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
