About this sheet

Casas Grandes (Mexico), an original steel engraving with hand coloring, c.1860, showing the prehistoric ruins in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. The title "Casas Grandes (Mexico)" is engraved beneath the image, and the margin carries the name of the Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen as the source of the plate.

Weathered adobe walls and stepped, tapering towers stand on a grassy rise, with groups of figures in bright blankets and hats resting and standing among them. Large cacti and spiky agaves fill the foreground, and a ridge of mountains lies behind, with two peaks tipped with snow. The ruined walls are modeled in warm earth colors against the green slope, and the sheet has a thin decorated border ruling around the image.

Casas Grandes, now usually called Paquimé, was a large town of the pre-Hispanic Casas Grandes culture of northern Mexico, built largely of earth.
