This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, one of the most legendary naval commanders of the Dutch Republic. Born in 1598, Tromp served as a lieutenant admiral and played a crucial role during the Eighty Years’ War and the First Anglo-Dutch War. He is remembered for his naval victories against the Spanish and English fleets, and for raising a broom to the mast of his ship as a symbol that he had swept the seas of enemies.
In this portrait, Tromp stands confidently in richly detailed military dress with a feathered hat and an ornately patterned sash. He holds a command baton and looks ahead with resolute determination. The background features lightly sketched figures preparing cannons, reinforcing his role in active naval command. The hand-colored detailing emphasizes his authority and the vibrancy of Dutch maritime power during the seventeenth century.
The lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. It combines documentary precision with a dramatic presentation, capturing the spirit of a naval hero whose name remains etched in Dutch history.
