This rare and finely detailed 17th-century copper engraving depicts the bay and fort of Solor Island, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in eastern Indonesia. Titled 'Solor', it shows European ships anchored in the bay (A), the mountainous landscape, coastal settlement, and the prominent fort (D) situated on the island’s elevated terrain. The engraving includes a legend identifying features such as the rocky entrance to the bay (B and C) and two figures in European dress (E) at the bottom right, typical of contemporary travel illustrations.

This print originates from a French edition of a travel compilation published in the late 17th century, likely by Melchisédech Thévenot or from the 'Relations de Divers Voyages Curieux', a renowned series documenting early European encounters and trading posts in Asia. The style is characteristic of travel engravings documenting Dutch and Portuguese colonial forts, used to inform European readers about strategic outposts in the East Indies during the height of VOC (Dutch East India Company) expansion.

The fort of Solor was originally established by the Portuguese in the 16th century as part of their sandalwood trade network before it was taken by the Dutch in the 17th century. This engraving is historically significant as it captures an early European depiction of the island and its fortifications, ships, and settlement structure in a region crucial to spice and sandalwood trade routes.
