Medieval German Knights Plate 1200–1400, Antique Hand-Colored Print
This striking antique costume plate presents an exceptionally detailed depiction of German medieval knights and armor from approximately 1200 to 1400. Richly hand-colored and produced for a respected late-19th-century historical costume atlas, the print illustrates the evolution of knightly warfare, heraldic symbolism, and protective equipment during the High and Late Middle Ages. It is an ideal piece for collectors of medieval art, arms and armor, or historic illustration.
The upper section of the plate features an array of helmets, crests, and decorative elements used by German knights. These include early rounded helms, conical helmets with nasal guards, elaborately riveted great helms, and vibrant crests shaped like animals and flowers—iconic markers of knightly identity on the battlefield and in tournaments. Additional items such as saddle coverings, spurs, and lances further highlight the refinement and ingenuity of medieval craftsmanship.
The lower register presents six full-standing knights, each wearing distinctive armor and bearing shields adorned with heraldic motifs. From the lion-emblazoned shield at left to the floral and cross-shaped insignia carried by others, the plate vividly conveys the individuality of medieval combatants. The hand-applied colors—rich blues, reds, deep golds, and metallic grays—give texture to chainmail, brigandines, surcoats, and the stylized tabards of the time. Condition report: Very good antique condition with even age toning. Minor marginal wear and faint spotting in the outer border, consistent with age. Image area clean, colors vibrant, and no tears or losses.
Framing tips: A cream or parchment mat beautifully complements the colors of the armor and shields. A dark walnut or deep oak frame brings out the historical weight of the imagery, while an antique-gold frame accentuates the heraldic details and metallic tones.
