This finely hand-colored 19th-century engraving depicts a mounted soldier of the French heavy cavalry (Grosse Cavalerie) as it appeared in 1795, during the formative years of the French Revolutionary Wars that directly preceded Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power. Shown astride a powerful horse, the cavalryman wears the characteristic uniform of the period, combining practicality, elegance, and martial presence.
The image reflects the transition from Revolutionary armies to the professionalized forces that would soon become the Grande Armée. Heavy cavalry played a decisive role in French military doctrine, valued for shock tactics, battlefield dominance, and symbolic authority.
