Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick – German Military Portrait Engraving, c. 1800
Original antique German portrait engraving depicting Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1721–1792), one of the most distinguished military commanders of the 18th century. Note: the print is sold unframed.
Ferdinand is shown in a formal bust-length portrait wearing military dress, his hair arranged in the characteristic 18th-century style. Beneath the portrait is an extensive biographical text in German describing his life and military career.
Ferdinand was born in Brunswick in 1721 and became a prominent Prussian field marshal and military commander. During the Seven Years’ War he commanded the allied Anglo-German forces in western Germany and achieved several important victories against the French, most famously at the Battle of Minden in 1759.
Following his military career, Ferdinand returned to Brunswick, where he devoted considerable attention to intellectual, cultural and philanthropic interests until his death in 1792.
