Chinese Infantry Soldier Costume Print, Hand-Colored Military Plate
This finely hand-colored antique costume print depicts a Chinese infantry soldier in ceremonial military dress, presented with striking detail and vivid color. The figure stands frontally holding a long firearm with bayonet attachment, dressed in richly ornamented robes accented in deep blue, vermilion red, gold, and pink tones. The elaborate costume and military accessories reflect Western fascination with Qing Dynasty China during the 19th century, when illustrated costume books and ethnographic publications introduced European audiences to distant cultures and imperial armies.
The print combines documentary interest with decorative appeal. The soldier’s distinctive helmet, embroidered tunic, and layered garments are carefully rendered, offering insight into period military attire and the visual language of Qing imperial authority. The delicate hand-coloring remains particularly attractive, with strong contrast between the dark robe and luminous red and yellow trim.
