Antique Portrait Prince Rupert – English Civil War Commander, c.1850
A finely engraved and highly decorative mid-19th century portrait of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, one of the most charismatic and formidable military leaders of the English Civil War. Nephew of King Charles I and commander of the Royalist cavalry, Rupert became a defining figure of 17th-century British history, known for his bold tactics and aristocratic presence. This elegant engraving captures him in formal attire, richly dressed and confidently posed, embodying both nobility and martial authority.
The portrait is enclosed within an elaborate ornamental border typical of the celebrated publications of John Tallis & Company. The intricate frame features a dense interplay of Gothic and Renaissance-inspired motifs, including scrolling foliage, pointed arches, and stylized decorative elements.
