Long-Nosed Surgeonfish – Antique Hand-Colored Fish Engraving, Nodder c.1794
This finely detailed hand-colored engraving depicts a long-nosed surgeonfish, shown in lateral profile and rendered with exceptional precision. The plate originates from a late 18th-century English ichthyological publication and was engraved and published in London in May 1794 by F. P. Nodder, one of the most accomplished natural history engravers of his time.
The fish is illustrated in a classic scientific manner, isolated against a plain background to allow close study of form, proportion, and surface detail. Condition report:
Fair to good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with light browning and scattered surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small pin holes along the lower margin, as issued. No modern restoration observed.

This print lends itself well to a museum-style presentation. A warm off-white or soft ivory mat will complement the aged paper tone, paired with a natural walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring and paper.
