About this sheet

An original antique lithograph, uncolored, circa 1833, made in memory of the Russian fleet in the Bosphorus. The Russian caption at lower left reads "Воспоминанiе пребыванiя Россiйскаго флота въ Босфорскомъ проливѣ подъ командою Вице-Адмирала Лазарева." and below it "Соотечественникамъ.", in English: a remembrance of the stay of the Russian fleet in the Bosphorus strait under the command of Vice Admiral Lazarev, to his compatriots.

The view looks out over the strait from a raised point above the shore. Large three masted warships lie at anchor in rows across the water, many flying the Russian naval ensign with its diagonal cross, and a steamer with a smoking funnel lies in the middle distance left of center. Rowing boats and a small sailing boat move across the foreground water. At lower left are tiled roofs and the fronts of houses, with a long waterfront promenade beyond them where small figures walk. Wooded hills rise along the far shore, with paler mountains behind. Below the image at the center is a small vignette of a stone monument marked 1833, set among plants, and beneath it two medals joined by a bar: the left one shows a crescent and star and is dated 1833, the right one carries a calligraphic monogram. To the right of the vignette are two lines of Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script, and at lower right, in smaller type, "Въ пользу бѣдныхъ" (for the benefit of the poor).

The artist's line below the lower left corner of the image reads "Рисовалъ на Камнѣ Писарь Ив: Васильевъ.", drawn on stone by the clerk Iv. Vasilyev. The printer's line below the lower right corner names the lithographic press of Beggrov ("Беггрова"). No place or date of printing is lettered.

In 1833 Sultan Mahmud II, threatened by the advancing army of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, accepted Russian help, and a Russian squadron under Mikhail Lazarev anchored in the Bosphorus. In July 1833 Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Hünkâr İskelesi, and the Russian forces left the strait soon afterward.

Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin. All four corners complete. Minor edge wear, shallow nicks along the right and top.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
