About this sheet

A small, vigorous etching of Willy Lott's House at Flatford, the Suffolk subject John Constable returned to throughout his life.

The farmhouse stands at left with its steep roofs and tall chimney, half hidden behind a dense mass of trees. The mill stream runs between overgrown banks toward the foreground, and a broad, windswept sky of rolling cloud fills the upper half of the plate. The etcher has worked in strong, free lines that keep the feel of an oil sketch rather than a finished painting.

The sheet carries no lettering. The subject is identified from two auction records of the same etching, both cataloged as Willy Lott's House after John Constable and dated 1875; a third record suggests the etcher was R.S. Chattock, but that is not confirmed and no etcher is named here. Etchings of this size after English landscape painters were published in art periodicals such as The Portfolio in the 1870s, and the plate is believed to come from one of them.

Willy Lott's cottage on the Stour near Flatford Mill is the house that appears in The Hay Wain, and Constable drew and painted it many times. The small plate mark, printed on a generous sheet of wove paper, gives the image a great deal of space.

Ideal for a study or a hallway, and a natural companion to other English landscape prints, it suits a wide cream mat that keeps the margin in view. The etched image is small, about 9.5 by 13.2 cm (height by width), printed on a large sheet whose wide margins are part of its charm.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
