During the nineteenth century it was widely discussed as a potential route for an interoceanic canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans before the construction of the Panama Canal. As a result, the river featured prominently in travel accounts, geographical studies, and illustrated publications intended to introduce European audiences to the landscapes and opportunities of the Americas.
