English Pastoral Landscape with Farm and Cattle, Boydell Etching, 1747
This refined mid-eighteenth-century pastoral landscape print titled “Drawn after Nature” was engraved by the British printmaker and publisher John Boydell (1719–1804). Created around 1747, the work belongs to the early phase of Boydell’s career, when he was establishing himself as one of the most influential figures in the British print trade. Boydell later became famous for transforming London into a major center for fine engraving and for promoting British artists internationally.
The composition presents a tranquil rural landscape inspired by direct observation of nature, a concept emphasized by the inscription “Drawn after Nature” printed beneath the image. This phrase reflects the growing eighteenth-century interest in naturalistic landscape representation, in which artists sought to depict countryside scenes based on real observation rather than purely imagined settings.
In the foreground a rustic farmhouse stands beside a rough wooden fence under the shade of large trees.
