Set of 3 Antique French Fashion Plates, Paris Ladies & Children Scenes, c.1880
A lively and visually engaging set of three Parisian fashion plates, depicting elegantly dressed ladies and children in animated social scenes, including a staircase arrival, interior settings, and refined domestic moments. The compositions are rich in narrative, movement, and period detail.
These original hand-colored engravings were published in the prestigious Journal des Dames et des Demoiselles, one of the leading fashion periodicals of 19th-century France. Together, the three plates present a dynamic view of Parisian life and couture, combining refined fashion with everyday social interaction.
One plate captures a particularly animated scene of ladies descending a staircase, with figures in motion and a bustling background, adding depth and storytelling rarely seen in more static fashion plates. Another presents a refined interior composition with elegant gowns in warm red and cool blue tones, while the third balances soft greys, greens, and deeper hues in a calm yet sophisticated domestic setting.
Across the set, the garments showcase a variety of textures—from structured tailoring and layered skirts to delicate trims and carefully styled accessories.
